Exam language
Can I take the Spanish driving theory exam in English?
Often yes — but confirm with your office.
Many DGT offices offer the theory exam in English, but availability depends on the office and it is not guaranteed anywhere. The questions are translations of Spanish legal wording, so the Spanish terms are still what the exam is built on.
The languages the DGT offers
The official test is written in Spanish. The DGT also offers it in Spain's co-official languages and, at many offices, in English, French and German. Availability depends on the office, so confirm when you book.
What to do about it
- 1
Ask your DGT office which languages they offer before you book.
- 2
Learn the Spanish wording of each rule beside the English — the questions are translated from it.
- 3
Rehearse in the official format: 30 questions, 3 errors allowed, 30 minutes.
The language bridge
Your Spanish grows with the course
The exam is not hard because of long words. It is hard because a few short phrases decide the answer. You learn them where they appear:
In the law
La superficie acristalada del vehículo deberá permitir, en todo caso, la visibilidad diáfana del conductor.- What it means
- In every case — without exception.
- It closes the door on exceptions. It is the opposite of “salvo” and “excepto”.
- In your language
- Clear visibility must be preserved in every case: no film or sticker may interfere.
